"Cough Cough" - Everything everything
this is a music video by Everything Everything its called "Cough Cough" and was there best selling song on there second album - `Arc. everything everything fit in to a niche genre of electro-indie with acapela vocals. this means that theirs not many bands like them making them unique.
|
these two shots contrast each other because of the way that are composed. the first shot of oil running across metal (the movement is slow and contrast the fast pace of the song) is abstract and stands out in the viewers mind but the second shot is the performance of the singer they both have strong whit strips and highlight the binary opposition of light and dark\black and white.
|
Use of words within the music video outline the main lyrics in the song. some show the strong emotions with in the viewer such as bad witch is surrounded by back and a very high contrast. when others like "eureka moment" are bright and golden showing the light of intelligence. other words such as "cough" are there to stick the word in tot he viewers mind they are the largest texts and are them most dynamic though out the video witching with sizes and from positive to negative.

Target Audience
From watching the video I feel the target audience is anyone between the ages of 13-23. This is because these are the years that men and women both go though stages of feeling unsure of who they are. they are normally judged on there actions and feel like they have the rite to "rebel" - do what they wont. seeing as the singer P!nk is a women and her stage name depicts a colour that is an ideology of women I would say that the target audience is a majority of women. This music video is all about standing up for your self and seeing how ever lost you feel we all stand together for what we feel is right - at 1.35 - 1.45 the panelling of all the different peoples faces show that the weird people (freaks) are as one. |
I see this clearly at the beginning of the music video (0.00 - 0.06) this shows a girl at a canteen table. sitting next her are to cardboard cut outs of typical "popular" girls. this high lights that these girls aren't the norm and just because you look different doesn't mean there better than you. the fact that the "normal" girl in the middle knocks one of them over and continues eating shows empowerment to do what you want.
the whole meaning of the video is being out of the ordinary is never a bad thing and if we stay strong then some day well all be equal. this video was made and released in 2010 four years on scenes depicted in the video such as same sex marriages (0.24 - 0.27) have become more normal in the public eye. has it become this way from help of artist and celebrity's such as P!NK? does this show the influence media has on people between the ages of 13-23?

"Every other freckle" - Alt-J
|
For my final piece I have chosen to do the genre of "Indie". this genre is hard to define but from analysing videos from artist from the same genre ill be able to generate my own codes that they fall to.
this music video of "every other freckle" by Alt-J. this band is a new wave indie this song is on there second album "this is all yours" witch came out the 22 of September 2014 - there first album "An awesome wave" came out in the summer 2012. the main difference between the to albums is that "an awesome wave" was more main stream and with much simpler layers of music when the new album has more complex layers with the less electronics focusing on vocals. |
this whole song have no performance or narrative its more a collage of clips that express the lyrics and the character we see though out the video. the lyrics are sexual and most are simile. interestingly "every other freckle" has two official music video one starting a women and the other a man, the shots are almost exact.
"Norgaard" - The vaccines
This is "Norgaard" By the Vaccines. this music video is short and fast pieced and the music video mirrors that with fast sequencing of shots. this video also has a lot of voyeuristic images and intertextuality with cultural images of "sex".
for examples it has intertextuality of an adult poster from the 80's called "tennis girl" (it was taken by a photographer called Martin Elliot's) that has become an iconic image of men idolising women - this mirrors the theme of the song because this girl is the main singers "perfect girl" but the line shes only 17 so shes probably not ready underlines the fact that its a forbidden love such as the poster is taboo. the voyeurism comes from the location the video is set in. its a photography studio and your seeing the "behind the scenes" the close ups on the girl shows forces the audience to look at the girl closely ( the old dirty man with his binoculars). this fits the genre of the song because young adults are the target audience and stereotypical they are " run but sex and rebellion"

"Coming of Age" - Foster the people
this is "Coming of Age" by foster the people, this whole video is a time-lapse for a professional street artist painting the front cover of the album on to a building. it shows the passing of time and the hours it takes to create a painting of this size. but the gracefulness of the clouds at day and the strong bright light so vehicles at night contrast the slowly growing image. this shows a world that we don't normally see and the use of time-lapse in a music video shows the grace of the music and keep the videos flowing. this is a camera technique that i will use in my final video.
street art has been used in many genres to express a feeling but is mostly used in urban songs this can span from pop to rap to indie. for example rudemental used some street art.

"habits" - Tove lo

this video uses interesting cinematography. the whole video is shot with a body mounted camera that places the subject (in this case a girl) to be static in the shot - her body is fixed to the camera. this means the world moves around her as she walks. this is good because its a new way to show the pint of view of the subject In a "out of body experience" its also usfull as is used in this video to convey confusion or loss of reality to the video. i would like to explore this in my music video as well as exploring with angles of the body mounted camera.

"Carried Away" - Passion Pits
|
Carried away was realised as the fourth song on passion pits 2012 album Gossamer. But the music video was released released on February 14th (appropriately Valentines day) and has reached over 6,700,000 views on the Passion Pit Vevo YouTube account as of June 2014.
It was directed by Ben and Alex Brewer, produced by Braxton Pope and Saul Levitz - in collaboration with Sophia Bush. The video shows a relationship in trouble acted by the bands lead singer Michael Angelakos and Sophia Bush, arguing and getting in fights. Michael Angelakos said described the song as "his favourite song on the record". On 19th November 2012, Passion Pit announced a "Carried Away Remix Contest". The winner, Freddie Westborn, won $1000 as his prize and his remix was released as a free download.
